Richard May is a writer, reader, gardener, optimist, and extroverted introvert. His favorite colors are red, orange, and yellow in that order. He likes apple pie with cheddar on top, Jane Austen at least once a year, and his husband Wayne Goodman all the time. He began writing at the age of nine, thanks to his fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Sheets. Illustrations tell him stories. He writes them down as fast as he can.
Rick’s short fiction has been published in his story collections Because of Roses: Ten Stories; Gay All Year; Inhuman Beings: Monsters, Myths, and Science Fiction, and Ginger Snaps: Photos & Stories of Redheads (with photographer David Sweet) and in numerous literary journals and anthologies, including the Lambda Literary nominated Outer Voices Inner Lives.
He worked for trade and academic publishers in New York and California in editing, sales,
subsidiary rights, and contracts. For ten years, he ran his own book sales representation firm. He was involved in politics, civil rights, and community service in both locations.
Rick is a member of the 18th Street Writers, Shut Up and Write Benicia, and the Bay Area Queer Writers Association. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Raymond College at the University of the Pacific and studied post-graduate English at the University of Southern California. He was born in Sacramento, California and lived for a number of years in Brooklyn, New York. His home is now the San Francisco Bay Area.
